将两个林奈种（A，B）杂交，所得的F1与现有的另一个林奈种C在分类特征上完全一致时，即可确认，物种C起源于物种A和物种B，是由二者自然杂交产生的，物种C即称为复合种。

这是由遗传学家H.K.Lamprecht于1949年提出的，一直沿用至今。欧洲油菜（Brassica napus），就是小松菜（B.campestris）与甘兰（B.oleracea）的复合种；烟草（烟草属 tabacum）是N.sylvestris与N.tomentosiformis的复合种。按照这一定义，也可以说普通小麦是二粒系小麦和山羊草的复合种。
