少以文学知名，万历中倭犯朝鲜，兵部尚书石星荐宗城为都督事，充正使，指挥杨方亨为副使，拟封丰臣秀吉为日本王，使罢兵，至朝鲜釜山，倭来益众，为之胆怯，变服逃归，下狱论戍。
