汉元鼎六年(前111)，在湖南江永县西南置谢沐县，因境内有谢水、沐水，故名。属交州苍梧郡。县治于今江永县夏层铺镇上甘棠村，县域相当于现江永县西南部、恭城瑶族自治县东北部及富川瑶族自治县北方小部分。

三国吴甘露元年(265)至南北朝，谢沐属临贺郡(刘宋改临庆国)。隋开皇九年(589)，谢沐县、营浦县合并，永阳郡撤消，置永阳县。
