1958年12月1日，中共海南岛委员会和广东省海南行政公署将澄迈县、临高县两县合并，定名金江县，县治在今澄迈县金江镇。1959年3月22日，国务院86次全体会议决定金江县改名澄迈县，4月正式启用“澄迈县”名。
