盾尾蛇科(Uropeltidae)的穴栖蛇类的统称，40馀种，产于南亚。无毒，体短(一般不足30公分〔12〕)，眼小，吻尖。许多种类尾的末端扁平，似盘状盾。体色多鲜豔，有的黑色，闪闪发光。多以蚯蚓为食。圆筒蛇属(Cylindrophis)和异唇蛇属(Anomochilus)均具残存的腰带，或与南美的筒蛇属(Anilius)合为筒蛇(Aniliidae)。圆筒蛇属种类常见于稻田，受惊时将头藏在盘绕的身体下面，抬起形似毒蛇头部的尾部。
