临允县，刘宋、齐、梁、陈因之。隋开皇九年（589年），废临允县。

西汉元鼎六年（公元前111年），刘彻平定南越后，在今新兴县地域设置临允县，因县治（今广东新兴县城）临近允水，即今回龙河而得名。属合浦郡（郡治在今广东徐闻县）。

三国吴黄武五年（226年），临允县属苍梧郡（郡治在梧州市）。

东晋永和七年（351年），从苍梧郡分置出新宁郡（郡治在今广东新兴县城）。临允县属之。
