蒲昌海，今新疆东南部的罗布泊。自汉至唐称为蒲昌海，又名盐泽、牢兰海、泑泽、辅日海、临海。地当西域东方的门户，为当时东西交通主要路线所经过。

古时帕米尔高原河(今喀什噶尔河)、于阗河(今和田河)合流后(即今塔里木河)，注入蒲昌海。自汉以后，误以为蒲昌海水更潜行地下，南出于今青海省境之积石山而为黄河；这一河水重源说，自唐以后始渐知其误。
