中、南美洲雀形目(Passeriformes)窜鸟科(Rhinocryptidae)约27种地栖鸟类。受惊时即举起其尾匆忙跑开躲避。大小介於鷦鷯与之间，翅短，脚较长，足强壮可扒土。多数种类红褐色或灰色，两性都有点斑或横斑；林区的窜鸟较开阔丛林者色暗。营巢场所各异，从地洞到树洞，有的在灌木上筑球形巢。
