薛瓒，太原人，早年追随姚弋仲，属于羌人头集团中的重要谋士，后来在姚襄的手下当参军。公元357年五月姚襄兵败被前秦苻黄眉击杀后，他跟随着姚苌，投向了前秦，苻坚时，为中书侍郎。后在前秦淝水之战失败后，他又投靠了后秦。
