东晋永和七年（351年），从临允县分置出单牒县（县治在今新兴县东成镇单牒村），属新宁郡（治新兴县，在今广东新兴县城）。

隋开皇九年（589年），废单牒县。唐武德四年（621年），复置，属新州（治筠城，在今广东新兴县城）。唐天宝元年（742年），撤销单牒县并入新兴县。
